A survey conducted in 2018 by Dom Cabral Foundation, with 1,200 entrepreneurs from all over Brazil, showed that, to lead a team, the manager must know himself and be an example to his/her group. Therefore, self-knowledge is one of the most important skills for a good professional. Being self-aware favors a more assertive management, more motivated teams and, consequently, better results for the organization.
Managing to get that understanding of oneself, however, isn’t easy. In addition to strengths, the manager must also be aware of his/her weaknesses. Being able to evaluate this complete set of attitudes will make professional development easier and will increase the chance of success in decision-making, strategic planning and conflict management.
In this article, I’m providing 5 tips that can help boost your career and develop self-awareness:
1. Don’t be afraid to ask for help
One of the most effective ways to evolve professionally is to ask people from your team or co-workers what they think about you. This will show them that you are willing to find your improvement points, in order to further improve them.
2. Always provide feedback
Providing feedback on the activities performed by the team you lead contributes to the development of each professional in the company, including your own. This is one of the best strategies to ensure that tasks will always stay in line with production pace.
3. Recognize the merits of professionals from your team
The key management tool for a leader is to recognize both his team’s potential and his/her own. This ensures the satisfaction of professionals and the motivation to generate more results.
4. Engage your team
Having engaged employees means having a positive experience in the company’s daily routine. For such purpose, having a pleasant work environment is crucial, as it minimizes people resistance and therefore improves production.
5. Know how to decide
Self-knowledge brings confidence, a required quality to lead and seek answers. With this support, the professional begins also to realize if he/she is ready to achieve results and many times offers proposals on how to improve them.
